Someone told me that divorce lawyers are the highest paid lawyers next to malpractice lawyers. I know there are a lot of divorces, but how can there be so many that a lawyer “does” divorces for a living?

Supply and demand. There will unfortunately always be an overage of messy divorces.

This is probably so, because there are a LOT of divorces in the U.S. I mean, have you seen California? I live here but every other month, I hear about couples considering separation and stuff. That just goes to show where our society is headed nowadays.

So sad.

Because people are stupid and get married for the wrong reasons (OMG! we like the same music and he/she is HOT) and it doesn’t work.

The divorce rate is and has been well over 50% for quite some time now. I’ve never met a poor divorce lawyer.

Maybe they hire people behind the scenes to break up marriages. I’m sure divorce lawyers do other things like wills, pre nuptial agreements and things like that.

You have answered your own question. With so many divorces, a lawyer will always have a line-up of clients. Sad, isn’t it.

There are a lot of billable hours involved with a divorce. Also, there are LOTS of customers.

But I would hardly think that they are the highest paid. There are Corporate lawyers that make over $1000 per hour.

Well you were mis-informed. Personal injury and biglaw corporate lawyer are highest paid. Divorce lawyers do make a good amount of money but it is not “fun,” if anything it is pschycologically demanding.

cause they don’t get married, therefor don’t have to pay out on what they make.

Well coming from experience, I work for a law firm, and Most of our attorneys are family law aka ‘divorce’ attorneys. We bill for EVERYTHING. You call and want to simply ask ONE question, Yeah you bet your butt we are billing you at a rate of atleast $180 per hour

And say you go to trial, to split common property/community debts etc, child support and visitation, well they have to go through the file and extensively research and prepare, at atleast $180 per hour. Not to mention they need copies for oposing counsel, the judge, and our copy and the clients copies

Not only are they billing you for 1. the copies at .10 a copy, The yare having someone like a copy or file clerk bill the client for their time MAKING the copies at atleast $35-60$ an hour.

Postage, they bill you for that too.

If you need exhibits, $25 for a BINDER that probably costs the firm like .89 cents.

None the less……. E-mails, ABSOLUTELY anything you can think of, we bill you for :D

Crazy I know, but attorneys can do what they want…. they’re ‘god’ (in their heads)

they charge by the hour. the better ones in my town can easily make around $400 per hour.

if divorcing couples could agree on the terms, they wouldnt need lawyers, but since they cant there will always be a need for divorce lawyers.

since the national stats on divorce in America is still going up each year, thats an awful lot of divorces and lots of billable hours.

Nobody has mentioned overhead yet. The lawyer has an office to pay for, secretaries to pay and any other costs that go with running a business. Plus he probably is paying off the 8 years of college. lol

As one who has been married and divorced, more than once, I can tell you that the “hate”, spite, and anger between two individuals will drive them to spend more money to “get back at” another than you can believe, and, coupled with how many divorces there are, and how easy they are to initiate, it’s no wonder a divorce lawyer makes so much money. The old movie “The War of the Roses” will show you, with incredible truth, how this happens. Hopefully you will help drive those numbers down. God Bless you.

No, that is not true. Being a laywer — like most professionals — is being a business. Some lawyers make a lot of money, some don’t. It depends on their MARKETING ABILITY, and ability to create a reputation that allows them to charge a lot of money. A lawyer’s fee really has almost NOTHING to do with the lawyer’s skill or competence, because clients really have no way of knowing if the lawyer is doing a good job or not. There are so many reasons for winning or losing other than the attorney’s skill that the client really cannot know for certain.

So whether a lawyer makes a lot of money really depends upon their MARKETING skill (not legal skill) and their ability to persuade people that they are worth a lot of money.

This really has nothing to do with what KIND of lawyer one is. DIvorce lawyers can make a lot of money, or can be almost broke. It really depends on whether they attract clients that have money and are wiling to spend it.
