Do divorce lawyers ask for birth certificates and ss #’s of the children and soon to be ex wife?

My daughter and son inlaw are getting divorced. He said that the lawyer asked for her id and my grandaughters. This doesn’t seem right.
He is also illegal.

unless the lawyer is desperately seeking out certain information. such as paternity of the children, but that would require a dna test, not birth certificate. not sure about the ssn#s unless there was sort of account going to be opened, like a trust fund, college fund, etc. sounds a bit fishy.
